The past couple of days I have been catching up with some of the blogs I didn't have the chance to read over the holidays. As I feel like I still have a lot to learn about this blogging thing, I subscribe to a lot of blogs about how to blog. So, when I saw a December 26th post on Biz Plan Hacks about bloggers who generously give away their knowledge in order to help others, I was interested.
As I scrolled down the list, I found myself nodding. Several of the blogs I already
subscribe to, others I'm looking forward to investigating in the future. Then I saw this blog on the bottom of the list.
First thing I thought was, "ME???? Is that really me???" I was floored. And then I wondered if anyone had told him that the 26th of December is my birthday.
Seeing my name up there really made me think. When I write, I know that I have a small audience who will read what I have to say. My parents, my grandpa, some wonderful friends I've met along the way, a few others who were interested by the subject of my research and want to know what I have to say. But knowing that I have some readers feels different when I actually see my name online as a "blogger!" It feels much more real.
And it also made me really start to think about what I want to do with this blog. I know that I want to become a resource for how the changing workplace affects college students. I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to do that yet. I haven't decided if I want to write towards a college-aged market, or towards adults who will be helping their students make decisions.
What I do know for sure is that I want to share information that will help college students to be prepared for the changing workplace.
I want to write about:
- Research I've found about how the workplace is changing and how that changes what skills workers need to learn.
- My own experiences and those of others who have also had a difficult time discovering what they want to major in.
- Advice from experts about what students can do to prepare themselves for a changing workplace, how to enhance their strengths and how to be employable.
- Books and resources I have found helpful in helping me understand the business world and ways to be successful in it.
- Results from my survey of 551 employers about how the workplace is changing and what skills they are looking for in young people.
By sharing those things, I hope to create a comprehensive source of information that will not only help students know what they can expect, but also make it easier for them to choose a college major because they will know that a decision they make at 20 will not set their entire life in stone.
But since this website is still in the planning stages, I really need your help! Please write comments about things you think I do well or can improve on, send me emails of things you'd like me to look into, tell me when I write something that you like. I need feedback to create the best blog I can and I'm really looking forward to hearing from you.
