When I told my parents that I wanted to major in theatre, I can still remember the look on my dad's face -- that's nice dear, but how do you plan to earn a living?

As I neared graduation, a professor, one that I truly respected gave me this advice: If you can do anything else at all, do it. Do not under any circumstances pursue life as an actor (artist) unless it is the only path you can possibly imagine.

This is probably some of the worst advice I ever received and had a profound effect on my life. What if that professor had said, go for it, try it, what have you got to lose? Think of the adventures you might have...where following your interest might lead, what you will learn...

Now as a parent of a high school junior, I'm faced with the heavy responsibility of advising my son as he weighs his options. What school, where, what to study, how much to spend, what will happen AFTER college?

So far, I'm leaning toward the "do/study what you love and the rest will follow" school of thought. BUT -- at the same time, we're aware of the implications of college debt, which can easily restrict your options post-college. I'm eager to read your blog -- and hope that you can help us navigate the maze of "shoulds" and "possibilities" and "what ifs".

Okay. I'm out of the closet. Just in case you're wondering what us lurkers think about if your college major matters, I'll fess up.

Although I'm a well-known business consultant today, my college degree is in (blush) .... home economics education. As you can see, it has absolutely nothing to do with my current livelihood and passion.

Don't tell anyone though! I don't want to lose my credibility.

I'm delurking!

It's interesting to find your blog as I recently was on a panel at the University of New Hampshire about job opportunities for Math majors. The students were definitly more interested in the "job for life" or at least a long time concept than the reality today, or so it seemed to me.
