Choosing a college major can be such an ordeal that there must be an easier way for students who are unsure to go about it. Perhaps a student's personality and way of operating is a clue to what they should study?
To check this out, I looked up a resource called College in a Can. This book deals with what it's like to go to college for the first time and has a brief section describing the different types of students who choose to study different majors.
According to College in a Can, English majors are romantics who love order and routine, Studio Art majors are reclusive artsy types who prefer to make mosaics out of broken tiles than spend time with friends and Psychology majors are obsessed with finding out why everyone is really acting like that and what childhood factors are affecting their actions.
On the other hand, Business majors are go-getters with entrepreneurial ideas and Economics majors are the best at seeing the big picture, thinking in terms of trends and forecasts, and dissecting ideas to share with others in an easy-to-understand format. For me, this description was not very constructive.
To students who are ambitious, it's obvious that the authors of College in a Can really consider only Business and Economics majors to have the sort of characteristics that are desirable in the workplace. To them, English majors are like strict librarians, Art majors are detached from the world and Psychology majors are completely consumed with prying into the lives of others to the exclusion of everything else.
After reading something like this, what major would you choose?
