Over the past couple weeks, I've been getting incredible responses to my survey. I can't tell you everything about it yet, because I don't want to influence the people who are still planning to take my survey...
HOWEVER, my results are really exciting and I can't keep them all to myself much longer. Today, the 500th person responded to my survey and in honor of that, I'm going to release some of my highly-confidential data!
Some quick teasers:
500+ Respondents
20+ Countries
449 Recomendations about subjects to take in college (the results are surprising!)
- and-
457 Bits of Advice for Young People who don't know what they want to study!

And stay tuned for some more results!
Respondents to this survey come from all sizes of organizations, although the majority of respondents work at organizations between 11-100 employees, followed closely by organizations of under 10 employees. This distribution bodes well for the accuracy of the survey, since most of the businesses in the US have under 100 employees.
It is also good to see, however, that larger organizations are represented (73 responses for 1000+ employees). Although young people are less likely to get jobs exclusively at really large companies, they will still be a part of our lives for many years to come.
Stats:
165 - Under 10 Employees
176 - 11-11 employees
78 - 101-1000 employees
73 - 1000+ employees
The annual revenue of the organizations represented is also interesting to see. Although the first graph appears to show that some truly-huge companies are responding, number of employees is not necessarily the determining factor. This chart, however, breaks down the organization size even more.
Here we can see that the survey has been taken by small companies, medium -sized companies... and some really, really big ones!
Stats:
134 - Under $1 million
244 - $1-50 million
61 - $50-500 million
14 - $500 million - $1 billion
38 - Over $1 billion
The overwhelming majority of organizations hire fewer than 10 employees a year. The next largest group is organizations that hire 11 to 50 people every year.
This means that the majority of organizations represented in this survey are not so desperate for workers to fill a huge job gap that they will take every applicant they can get. Instead, the skills shown to be desired by this survey are likely to be significant to employers needing to fill a limited amount of positions.
Stats:
376 - Under 10 employees/year
92 - 11-50 employees
9 - 51-100 employees
15 - Over 100 employees
Although 80% of the respondents on this survey hail from the United States, there are still 94 respondents from all over the globe who gave a slightly different perspective on the results.
(However, this survey was focused to a US audience and sent out through a US newsletter, so I didn't expect many foreign results.)
The other countries represented are:
Canada- United Kingdom
- Australia
- Malaysia
- India
- South Africa
- Uganda
- Greece
- Singapore
- Germany
- The Netherlands
- Vietnam
- Trinidad and Tobago
- The Philippines
- Spain
- Brazil
- Thailand
- Finland
- Sweden and
- Switzerland
And that's all the information I can give you until I close my survey. But, be sure to check back! I'll continue putting more information on this website about how the workplace is changing!
